A new government initiative, the Job Ready Fund, opening for applications on July 1, aims to help combat that - working with Searson Buck, the fund will provide eligible Tasmanians with up to $500 to put towards the hidden extras.
Minister for Skills, Training and Workforce Growth Sarah Courtney said the fund, part of the new Jobs Tasmania government unit, was worth $2 million over two years.
IN OTHER NEWS:
"We know that these costs can be an impediment for somebody being able to actually get a job, so these $500 grants will help more Tasmanians into jobs," she said.
"We know that for many, many people around Tasmania there are a range of challenges they have being able to have pathways into employment - being able to remove this impediment is an important part of this initiative.
"What we're going to do is after six months, review the guidelines to make sure that they're fit for purpose and look at any changes that need to be done."
Tasmania's unemployment rate currently sits at 6.2 per cent, the highest of any state or territory across the country.
The fund has been welcomed by many across industry sectors, including employment support providers.
Tasmanian Council of Social Services chief executive Adrienne Picone said it was pleasing to see the much needed investment.
"Removing cost barriers for Tasmanians looking for work will go a long way to boosting workforce participation rates," she said.
