The court house has been a long-standing issue due to its small size and aged amenities and has previously been labelled as being from 'another era' by Mark Dreyfus and questioned by the Law Society of Tasmania.
Last year, the federal government provided $5.4 million over four years to help relocate the court to a better facility.

In the ceremonial sitting of the Federal Circuit Court of Australia, Chief Justice of the Family Court of Australia and Chief Judge of the Federal Circuit Court of Australia, Will Alstergren provided an update on the court house's future.
"The court is very much looking forward to the new Launceston court house. A preferred site has been identified and I expect significant progress will be made soon," he said.
The ceremonial sitting was conducted at the court house to welcome Judge Marcus Turnbull and Judge Sandra Taglieri to the Federal Circuit Court of Australia.
Judge Turnbull replaces Justice Terry McGuire who was appointed to the Family Court of Australia in May.
Judge Turnbull will be responsible for managing cases and sitting in the Launceston registry, which services all regions of northern Tasmania.
Judge Taglieri replaces Barbara Baker in the Hobart registry after Ms Baker's appointment to the governor-general position.
During the sitting, the pair were lauded for their long service to the law fraternity in Tasmania and advocacy for the underprivileged.
Judge Taglieri has been a long time advocate for workers compensation while Judge Turnbull is well regarded for his mediation work in family law.
Attorney-General Michaelia Cash praised the pair for their elevation to the Federal Court Circuit.
"I congratulate Judge Taglieri and Judge Turnbull on their appointments and thank them for their willingness to serve the people of Australia as judges of the Federal Circuit Court of Australia," she said.
The pair join the circuit at an interesting time with federal government's merger of the Family Court and Federal Circuit Court to occur in September.
The move by the federal government has been drawn a mixed response by the legal fraternity and Tasmanian politicians.
However, Judge Taglieri said the merger was an exciting opportunity.
"The merger presents as an exciting opportunity to ensure the Tasmanian community is well served in both family and general federal law cases," she said.
In the ceremony, the Chief Justice Will Alstergren said the courts would have a lot of work ahead of them before the merger occurs.
The Federal Circuit Court and Family Court of Australia will commence on September 1.
