There has also been a rise in domestic violence cases reported and increased conversations around mental health needs and services.
Drugs and gambling have also been discussed as we have asked Northern Tasmanians, who are in a position to do so, to donate to the Winter Relief Appeal to help those doing it tough.
Last year's appeal had a tremendous response and raised just shy of $120,000 compared to the $70,000 goal.
This happened in the middle of a pandemic - a great time of uncertainty for every Tasmanian.
While coronavirus sums up the past year, the issues faced by Northern Tasmanians remained and at times were exacerbated.
The bills still had to be paid, children clothed and educated at home, casual workers were even more vulnerable and those in the hospitality and tourism sectors would have been struggling to see the light at the end of the tunnel for many months.
Despite the pandemic, there are many opportunities and path of prosperity being experienced by many.
Those people seeking help are often asking a helping hand for the first time in their lives, not every week.
There is a gap and it takes a whole community to help improve the lives of neighbours, not just the responsibility of local, state or federal governments.
This is why, after 63 years, The Examiner's Winter Relief Appeal continues to remain not only relevant but vital for the people who call our region home. We are asking people to donate what they can.
As we know, it's the combined efforts that make a difference so even donations of a $1 will make an impact on many lives.
St Vincent de Paul Tasmania chief executive Lara Alexander summed up this longstanding community call to action perfectly in saying that it's all about helping people maintain their dignity.
