Under continued questioning on Thursday whether he believed Mr Brooks' denial over using a fake name to trick two women he dated in 2019, Mr Gutwein repeated the line that he had to take Mr Brooks at his word.
When asked why he chose to take the word of Mr Brooks over two women who had signed statutory declarations to support their claims, Mr Gutwein accused reporters of making the matter a gender issue.

"If Mr Brooks were gay and two men had made these claims, then my position would be the same," he said.
Mr Brooks is set to be the second Liberal member elected in the seat of Braddon on Thursday.
Mr Gutwein said he was comfortable in Mr Brooks being part of the government, but he would not say if the former Resources Minister would be brought into cabinet.
"I'm going to wait until the whole composition of the PLP is decided and then I'll make my decisions on the ministry,"
Mr Gutwein later said each member of his team likely to be elected would be worthy to take on the role of a government minister.
