TAMAR RIVER DREDGEING
THERE is nothing new about how badly contaminated the kanamaluka/Tamar Estuary sediment is, or possible problems associated with algae (The Examiner, May 7).

I have a 2011 letter from former premier Lara Giddings confirming the presence of all the contaminants mentioned in the City of Launceston council technical report at least 10 years ago, and no doubt they were there even earlier, yet dredging has occurred on a significant scale over the years and the sky certainly hasn't fallen in.
Concerns are also expressed about algal blooms due to the release of ammonia and nitrogen from dredging.
Algal blooms can be brought about for a variety of reason one of which is the lack of oxygen due to low river flows and the obvious answer to this is to increase South Esk River flows through the Cataract Gorge and into the upper reaches of the Tamar Estuary.
As WaterNSW says on its website: "In some river valleys environment flows may enable water to be released from storage to control algae growth".

SATANIC MUSIC INFLUENCE
I LISTENED recently with interest to a TV program that indicated satanic music is influencing young people towards self-destruction, suicide, violence, promiscuity etc.
Wouldn't it be wonderful if some people in the music industry took it upon themselves to send a different message to young people about how wonderful life can be?
A world without violence, drugs, suicide, aggression and rape.
Come on musical talent of Australia, lead the world towards a better way of life.

CHOICE OF VACCINE
I ECHO the sentiments of Peter Mudford's letter (The Examiner, May 8) questioning why the more vulnerable older people are being denied a choice of vaccine, when clearly AstraZeneca is inadequate to deal with the variants of COVID-19, compared to Pfizer.
Dr Norman Swan stated several weeks ago that Pfizer was stronger than the AstraZeneca vaccine.
Apart from the risks of blood clots associated with AstraZeneca, there is a time factor of three months for the second jab compared to Pfizer's three weeks.
As I wish to return to the UK as soon as a travel bubble is opened between Australia and the UK, I don't want to be caught having to wait for the second jab for up to three months, by which time the bubble may be ended for some reason.
I shall definitely wait for a Pfizer vaccine to be made available to me for these reasons.

STATE ELECTION RESULT
REGARDING our election, I heard or read a phrase that really connected; "It's better to be governed by good people, than good laws". Not sure what we are getting this time around, but I am hoping.
