Around 80 students attended the two day simulation workshop which focused on providing leadership and education in trauma situations which can happen outside the hospital environment.

UTAS students explored how to manage catastrophic haemorrhage, airways management, suspected spinal injuries, splinting and packaging of patients, potential spinal injuries and assessment of trapped casualties

CareFlight director of education Dr Samantha Bendall said that the students had received valuable skills from the workshop.

"Medical and Paramedic students developed their non-technical and technical skills in the management of trauma patients," she said.

CareFlight was thrilled to be able to work with Tasmania Fire Service and the SES also yesterday to introduce the students to pre-hospital medicine and working with other emergency services in that setting."

Dr Bendall said the course had received positive feedback from the students.

"The feedback from UTAS faculty and students was that it significantly developed their understanding of the challenges of working in the pre-hospital setting, and the need to learn to "speak the language" of other professional teams to work cohesively and efficiently."
