More than 95,000 Tasmanian homes and small businesses have been fitted with the new advanced meter boxes, which allow power usage to be read remotely and the data to be stored in a remote facility.

Customers with advanced meter boxes can sign up to "Aurora+" for 11 cents a day, which enables them to choose power price plans and download an app that allows them to view their daily power usage, and pay bills whenever they want.

Aurora Energy is obligated under national regulations to install advanced meters in Tasmania in new and replacement situations, and completion of this rollout is currently dependent on customer-initiated requests for advanced meters.

Aurora Energy chief operating officer Kane Ingham said being aware of power usage was an important energy saving tip.

"When paired with digital or other energy products that provide the metering data in a user friendly and informative way, advanced meters enable Tasmanians to make more informed choices about how and when they use electricity," Mr Ingham said.

"Knowing when and how much energy you're using can help Tasmanians save money, and Aurora has a digital product for that," he said.

"aurora+ empowers customers to take action to control their energy costs. It's available to any Tasmanian household or small business who would like to better monitor and understand their energy costs, and conveniently manage them via an app."

Premier Peter Gutwein said in an affordable energy announcement on Tuesday that they will "accelerate the rollout of advanced meters by 2026".

"This is in line with national electricity laws, to facilitate modern products that empower customers to lower their energy costs," he said.

The advanced meter boxes are stated by Aurora to be "the next generation of electricity meters and offer you many more benefits than traditional basic meters".

This includes billing accuracy and reduction of estimated meter reads, but also lets customers to sign up to Aurora+ which will help to avoid "bill shock".
