It may be controversial, but I think winter may be the best time to see Tasmania.
There's no getting around the fact that it's cold, and a swim at the beach may be off limits; however it's rarely grey - and it certainly isn't gloomy.
In fact, this is a time where the air is crisp, the sky cornflour blue and the crowds are nowhere to be seen.
Tassie lends itself to the cosy moments that come with winter like roaring wood fires, forest hikes, pub roasts and the occasional snow fall.
This is also when the state puts on some of its most exciting events, from the creative to the downright quirky.
In fact, for those with a hankering for the outdoors it also presents a unique opportunity to see some of the state's most famous sites, from mountain biking on the West Coast to hiking up Hobart's kunanyi /Mt Wellington under the cover of the Milky Way.

Mona has put Tasmania firmly on the winter arts map, and from June 16-22 it's welcoming crowds for the annual Dark Mofo festival. This much-loved event was sorely missed after being cancelled in 2021 due to COVID-19 and is a showcase of everything from virtual reality to a vast winter feast.
I don't think there's a better way to welcome winter than at the Huon Valley Mid Winter Fest.
This event is a testament to the resilience of the area and the power of this very tight-knit community following 2019's bushfires and then the COVID-19 cancellations. In a true testament to the spirit of the region, this year's event is promising to be better than ever before.
With long table banquets, bonfires and plenty of community events on offer, this is one not to miss.
And lovers of music and song - from the choral kind to the singing in the shower type - winter also offers a chance to participate in the Festival of Voices and to enjoy the lineup at the Devonport Jazz Festival.
Whoever said winter was for hibernation hasn't been to Tasmania. With a jam-packed calendar and the best cold-weather scenery outside the door, this is the place to be this winter.
