After team Red Bull Ampol colleague, and championship leader Shane van Gisbergen took out the first race on Saturday, Whincup was able to nab a win after a hard-fought race.
MORE SUPERCARS:
Whincup was humble in his victory, even taking a good-natured jab at van Gisbergen after the race.
"It's a good feeling to get a win of course," Whincup said.
"The bloke beside me [van Gisbergen] has had a shocker: he's come second.
I treat every one like it's my last

"But the car was great - I didn't get the start I would've liked to but then we had slightly better tyre-life than Cam's [Waters] so we got past and SVG was coming at the end but it was just enough to hang on."
The race win was Whincup's 123rd, with the 38-year-old still appearing to cherish every moment of his esteemed career.
"It keeps getting better - I'm not sure how many wins I can establish this year," he said.
"But I can guarantee you that I treat every one like it's my last."
Later that day, Mobil's Chaz Mostert won a dominant race eight.
The 29-year-old was relieved to "get the monkey off his back" and finally nab a win after a two-year drought.
"I was starting to believe I couldn't do it for a long time," Mostert said.
"[I'm] super stoked for the team, we were thereabouts on pace all weekend but that car was a lot of fun in that last race."
Van Gisbergen sits atop the Supercars season ladder with 865 points, followed by Whincup (726) and Mostert (700).
The spectacle managed to wrangle a crowd of more than 17,000 people to Symmons.
It saw plenty of action from not only the Supercars, but the Aussie Racing Cars and Stadium Super Trucks.
