The Elaine Cripps Family Award was created in honour of Elaine Cripps, who started her nursing training in 1956 and went on to work in all areas of the hospital - with a particular passion for theatre nursing.
After her death in 2018, Mrs Cripps' husband Gerald and their children Catherine, Chris, Diana, David and Marcus, approached the LGH with the idea to establish an award in her honour.
IN OTHER NEWS:
Last week, Sarah Elmore became the first nurse to receive the award, recognising excellence as a team member and in the area of surgical nursing practise.
Ms Elmore said she was honoured to be named the first recipient of the award, worth $1000, and thanked the surgical staff for their support and guidance during her transition year.
"I am humbled and proud to be recognised in this way and really hope I can make a difference to patient's theatre experience," she said.
After graduating in 1970, Mrs Cripps' extensive career also included work in the aged care sector in Devonport, Sheffield and later Victoria.
Throughout this she maintained a relationship with her training hospital through the participation in the LGH Ex-Trainee Nurses' Association, right up until her death.
Association president Deanna Ellis said it was wonderful to be able to continue the legacy of the hospital's former staff, while also recognising the efforts of nurses now at the start of their career.
"Patients often say thank you, but it's also important to recognise the commitment of staff in an official capacity like this," she said.
"We already offer three scholarships and all are in memory of previous nurses who trained at the LGH. This award will now be offered on top of this, with the support of the Cripps family."
The Elaine Cripps Family Award is open to registered nurses who have completed all aspects of the LGH's transition to practice program, in a surgical area.
It recognises those who have demonstrated excellence through providing care in a compassionate way.
