Police responded to calls about a neighbourhood dispute, and a shot fired from a moving vehicle, in Lawson Street, Mayfield, about 7pm on Saturday.
Detective Inspector Craig Fox said when police arrived, they found two damaged houses and a number of people in the street.
IN OTHER NEWS:
The two houses sustained broken windows which Detective Inspector Fox said was likely from bats or wood.
Another house was also involved, but was not damaged during the incident.
"Once we did a proper search of the area we did locate evidence of a firearm being discharged [into the air]," Detective Inspector Fox said.
"From our point of view, it seems to be a neighbourly dispute that has gotten out of hand."
Police are asking for public assistance to help locate a grey BMW that was seen in the area at the time.
Detective Inspector Fox said police believed the single shot into the air was discharged from the vehicle, and that the firearm was in the vehicle after attempts to locate it were unsuccessful.
"If we can find the people who have caused the damage, and more importantly let the shot off into the air ... we will charge them," Detective Inspector Fox said.
The incident comes after a spike in shootings within the past two weeks.
"We have had a spike there's no doubt about it ... which is shown throughout the year. We are slightly up on our firearm incidents in public places," Detective Inspector Fox said.
"It's not a massive increase, but very concerning that it seems to have happened a lot in a short period of time."
Detective Inspector Fox said three people - two young men and a man in his 30s - had been charged in relation to several of the previous incidents.
