UTAS will remove 10 non-indigenous trees behind the relocated River's Edge building and replace them with 14 semi-mature Indigenous trees, a new grassy lawn and a new walking/cycling track alongside the existing tram track, after the City of Launceston council approved the DA on Thursday.
The Indigenous trees will also integrate with the Riawunna Aboriginal Centre.
IN OTHER NEWS:
It will also build a six-metre wide vehicle access across the existing tram line into McGrath Way and five new bicycle parking spaces, as the adjoining parking lot will be replaced by the new learning and teaching building.
The council received five representations against the DA for the loss of heritage, the overall relocation, it would increase the flood risk and the environmental impacts.
The arborist report said any damage to the trees during construction would possibly result in the deterioration of their health and their roots posed a risk.
