The council decided to sell the building during the closed section of its March meeting.
The petition, started by Nicole Graham - who intends to run for mayor in 2022 - to stop the sale has received 230 signatures.
She said once an asset was lost, it was lost forever.
Selling history is not to any advantage to the community.

The council commissioned a report from consultancy firm Watershed Solutions to identify possible future usage and opportunities. However, the council revealed in October it intended to sell it due to ongoing maintenance costs.
The community is able to object to the sale, as it is a public facility, and mayor Mary Knowles said if objections were received the council would consider them.

"The decision to initiate the process to sell was made after several years of careful review, consultation and investigation into use of the town hall," she said.
The hall is used by the Campbell Town Museum and Visitor Information Centre and for monthly markets.
