A 30-year-old woman, of Mayfield, received two small puncture wounds that were caused by ballistic projectiles, a statement by police said.
Police believe the woman was driving a vehicle on St Leonards Road about 9.25pm when she pulled to the side of the road.
An unknown person approached the vehicle and a shot was fired into the vehicle with a number of pellets striking the woman in the back.
The injuries were previously described as superficial by police.
However, the woman is expected to undergo surgery later today for non-life-threatening injuries.
Police and Ambulance Tasmania attended the Launceston address about 9.30pm.
Detectives would like to speak to any members of the public who observed a gold Kia Cerato stopped on St Leonards Road, or heard anything suspicious in the St Leonards Road area between 9pm and 9.30pm on Thursday.
