Ms Ogilvie was initially elected into the parliament as a Labor member, before rejoining as an independent.

Despite this, she said her new party affiliation did not change who she was or her politics.

"I'm a strong independent woman, I'm a barrister and solicitor, I have been a general manager of a large multinational company - I'm able to make my own decisions," she said.

"My philosophies and values haven't changed - I had a difficult time with my old party, that's ancient history now.

"I was really pleased to be an independent and do really good things in Clark."

Admitting she was a "bit of a thorn in the side" of the government, Ms Ogilvie said when she returned as an independent she said she would come in and provide stability.

"So the logic of that had to follow through, if I am to run again I want to see a strong, stable majority government elected," she said.

"Peter Gutwein can do that, and you know what - I got to know him and I like him."

Both Mr Gutwein and Ms Ogilvie said they had regular ongoing discussions.

Ms Ogilvie became a Liberal party member on Saturday, and said she was not asked to put her application forward to be an endorsed candidate until "Sue [Hickey] did her thing."

The Premier called the state election on Friday, triggered by Speaker Sue Hickey's decision to resign from the Liberal party.

Ms Hickey said she'd been informed by Mr Gutwein she would not be re-endorsed for the election, so she decided to leave the party, which resulted in a minority government.

With Ms Ogilvie joining the Tasmanian Liberals, the government now has the numbers to go forward in majority, leading to the Premier being questioned about why he called the election rather than having Ms Ogilvie join the party a week earlier.

Deflecting, Mr Gutwein said it was an opportunity for Tasmanians to practice democracy, and vote for a stable government going forward.

"In terms of this, Madeleine Ogilvie joined the Liberal party yesterday (Saturday)," he said.

"She has put herself forward, it's brave, but the people of Clark will make their decision on whether or not Madeline Ogilvie is a member of the next Liberal majority government."

The election will be held on May 1.
