The school's cohort took out first place out of eight schools in the full-day challenge, where students took part in a variety of science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) activities.

Year 10 student Eunice Kidmas said her favourite part of the day were the challenges, taking part in "hover frenzy" where her team had to build a hovercraft.

Fellow Year 10 student Eli Aldred said he was interested in STEM as a future career option, and enjoyed the challenges the day posted.

"I'm thinking of going into engineering so this is very inspirational for that," he said.

"Being able to come here and do STEM things in a great environment was a lot of fun."

UTAS outreach officer Susie Haley said the days were about encouraging students to explore their future potential.

"They may not have considered a career in STEM, but they get to see that STEM is all about teamwork, thinking outside the square and solving problems," she said.

The challenge continues Tuesday at the Albert Hall, with six schools participating.

The top eight teams from all regional heats will compete at the state final in Burnie on March 29.
