To date, the app has been used by visitors to businesses as well as paper-based records.

Small Business and Hospitality Minister Sarah Courtney said the change meant specific businesses, community groups and event operators currently required to collect contact tracing needed to register with Check in TAS if they hadn't done so already.

This includes hospitality businesses, places of worship, cinemas, galleries, tourist premises, concert venues, auction houses, hair dressers, beauty treatment premises, spas, swimming pools and others.

Nelson independent MLC Meg Webb in October raised concerns about privacy and misuse of personal information by venues collecting contact-tracing information.

She made a complaint to the Public Health director about this.

"Clearly, the legal responsibilities for venues were still not well enough understood, which left both venues and patrons exposed," Ms Webb said.

"Given that the collection of personal information is now the new normal, it is important that we have a reliable, consistent and legal system in place.

"I'm pleased to see the standardised use of the Check in Tas app implemented to provide Tasmanians with confidence that the privacy of their personal information will be protected."
