Eight years after the Mariners were also the opponents in the second of two Melbourne Victory roster games in Launceston, the competition is back amid ongoing calls for Tasmania to play a more permanent role.
Victoria-based league newcomers United have locked in two games in six days with the twilight blockbuster against the high-flying Mariners on Saturday, April 17, preceding an evening match the following Thursday against Wellington Phoenix.
The second match will follow a curtain-raiser between Victorian senior women's team Calder United and a Tasmanian select team.
Western United chief executive Chris Pehlivanis said a festival of football will surround the games, with the team staying in Launceston for a week and plenty of opportunity for fans to meet the players.
"We know that Tasmania plays host to some of the country's most passionate and dedicated sports fans and bats above its average in producing world-class athletes across all sports," he said.
"For Western United, the partnership with Football Tasmania and the Tasmanian Government has come at the right time as Australia looks to open borders and promote travel and tourism within its shores once again.
"The week-long festival of football will give the Tasmanian community in and around Launceston, Devonport and Hobart the opportunity to experience what an A-League club has to offer."
Pehlivanis said the team will host community activities in all three cities and a family fun day on Sunday, April 18.
Tickets for both matches go on sale this week.
Melbourne Victory staged seven annual pre-season matches at the venue from 2006 to '12, attracting crowds of up to 8061.
The club eventually played two roster games in the city, with World Cup star Harry Kewell on the scoresheet in a 1-1 draw against Gold Coast United in front of 5268 supporters on a Wednesday night in 2012 before a Saturday crowd of 6238 watched another 1-1 draw against Mariners a year later.
Mariners have won eight of their 12 games this season, to lead the ladder by six points, while United sit eighth of the 12 teams with four wins and four losses and Phoenix are third bottom. Ironically, their visit is set to coincide with another Kiwi sporting franchise playing in an Australian league in Launceston with the New Zealand Breakers to host up to six NBL games at the Silverdome.
