Ms Daniel forged a career as a journalist with the ABC, working in regional newsrooms across Australia, as well as time spent overseas as a foreign correspondent - most recently in America.

It's her time spent covering politics during former President Donald Trump's campaign, election and time serving as President that is reflected in her new novel, Greetings from Trumpland, co-written with fellow journalist Roscoe Whalan.

Returning to Australia from America last year, Ms Daniel is back home for the first time since her return, to launch the novel at an event at Petrarch's on Thursday.

"Covering the Trump administration was wild, it was just relentless," Ms Daniel said.

"I feel very lucky to have been on the front end of history quite a lot, and this was such a historic election and presidency that shifted a lot of boundaries, and that's really what the book is about.

"Just to be there, to be in the White House, to be in the Oval Office, to be right in the middle of things, not just reporting on something that's happening from a distance but reporting it really up close, there's something really lucky about that."

Ms Daniel said the situation in America had some parallels to Australia, including social and political division and elements of the community feeling forgotten.
