A 19-year-old man tried to steal a Ford Courier which had a steering lock fitted, the Launceston Magistrates Court heard.

Jason Lee Riley, who appeared via video from custody on Tuesday, pleaded guilty to one count of motor vehicle stealing in November last year.
Police prosecutor Russell Forsyth said Riley had used scissors to start the car but when he couldn't steer because of the steering lock he abandoned the car just a few metres down the road.

Magistrate Sharon Cure said the steering lock had probably prevented the car from being damaged and saved the owner quite a bit of hardship.
The court heard that Riley had previously been sentenced in the Launceston Magistrates Court to a 43-week-and four-day sentence for offences including three counts of motor vehicle stealing, evade police, drug and driving offences.
Ms Cure sentenced Riley to a further term of four weeks jail which was wholly suspended for 18 months on the condition that he commit no offence punishable by imprisonment.
