A 46-year-old Newnham man is in a critical condition at the Royal Hobart Hospital after losing control of his motorbike and crashing on the Zeehan Highway.
Inspector Steven Jones said the crash happened about 9am near Tom Creek, about 12 kilometres south-east of Zeehan.
He said the man had been riding his Harley Davidson towards Queenstown when he lost control on approach to a right-hand bend.
"He veered off the road and crashed into an embankment," the inspector explained.
"The alarm was raised by another rider who was following and witnessed the crash."
The man was flown by the Ambulance Tasmania Helicopter to the RHH in a critical condition.
Police closed the highway and diverted traffic for several hours while investigating the scene but reopened about 3pm.
"Our crash investigators have commenced their inquiries into the exact cause of the crash," Inspector Jones said.
"Our thoughts are with the injured rider and his family."
Anyone with information about the crash is asked to call Zeehan Police on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
