The suits were dry cleaned, the shirts ironed and the ties matching - with the women dressed to impress in their dazzling dresses and fancy fascinators.

Despite the warnings, heeled shoes were adorned by the masses - but no heels more unique than those of Leonie and Jazmin Deavin and their stilts.

For Leonie Deavin, working at the event was a welcome homecoming.

"I'm initially from here in Launceston, but moved to Melbourne and started the business, then moved to Queensland three years ago and finally I'm back here to work and be with family," she said.

Ms Deavin started her business Nova Star Productions more than 20 years ago, working in a variety of positions across the entertainment industry, including as a dancer, choreographer and stilt-walker.

The mother daughter duo delighted the crowds throughout the Mowbray Racecourse as they soared over the masses.

"We've done a bunch of events before including the Melbourne Cup, and there's always one thing that keeps us coming back," Ms Deavin said.

"For us, it's all about putting smiles on people's faces - people's faces just seem to light up when they see us, they love stopping us and getting photos and we love it too."

The practiced and polished professionals said that the act of stilt-walking wasn't for the faint hearted.

"Our costumes alone cost around $3000, because they need to be custom made to fit the stilts," Ms Deavin said.

Tasmanian Turf Club chief executive Natalie Waters said they were thrilled with the turnout at Wednesday's event.

"Everyone's behaving themselves with COVID safety so we're more than thrilled," she said.

"It was touch and go earlier in the year, we started planning for 1000 people but we've been working very closely with the Department of Health and the council, they've been very supportive in helping us with ideas so we can keep everyone safe and everyone has been really well behaved, we're really impressed.

"They've all got entry and exit points now and sanitiser and things like that, so it looks a bit different.

"But, all in all, we've got everything we've always had, just more spatially aware and more seats.

"We'd like to thank the community for supporting the event and turning up for the 157^th running of the cup."
