The 22-year-old's appearance in the elite/under 23 Australian Championship race at the Devonport Triathlon will be key for the Hervey Bay product as he chases a spot at the Tokyo Olympics.

He has had some success on previous visits though, as in 2014 he won the OTU Triathlon Championships at the event.

"It's always a good race for me as I am a bit of a stronger swimmer and with the hill and the complications on the bike it just makes it a bit easier for groups to stay away, so it is a bit more of a stronger course, which I like, and it takes an all-round triathlete to win it,'' he said.

"Any racing opportunities we get now between Tokyo and selection is a tick in the box to try to show selectors what we have leading into that selection in April and onwards to Tokyo."

Hauser said there were some key elements to the Devonport course that he found quite comfortable.

"The fact it is a bit more of a skillful swim and the bike obviously with the hill chucked in as well it is a strong race," he said.

"Those factors lead it to being an all-round performance sort of course and it is not necessarily going to be the fastest person on the course that wins, but the strongest and most tactically sound."

While admitting the Tokyo Games were well and truly in the back of his mind, he said it was not something that would be a complete focus for him on the weekend, knowing that strong performances would lead to that end goal.

Hauser was a teammate of Tasmanian triathlon star Jake Birtwhistle at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games as part of the gold medal-winning mixed relay team, a partnership he hoped would continue in Tokyo.

"There is no doubt Jake has been leading the charge for Australian triathlon of late and to ride the coattails of that it is a great experience and learning from him in races and camps is great,'' Hauser said.

"There has been a lack of success on the Olympic stage in the past few cycles coming off the golden era that we had in the late 2000s and I think Jake is starting to change things and he is a critical part of the mixed team relay which I am hoping to get on board for Tokyo.

"His finishes are electric and without him I don't reckon we would have had a lot of the victories we have had.

"I am disappointed he is not racing [in Devonport] as it would have been good to have a hit-out against him, but obviously he has got bigger goals on the horizon having been selected."
