Coronavirus restrictions at Launceston Cup will include seated drinking

Launceston Turf Club chief executive officer Natalie Waters said the organisation had worked closely with the Health Department to put in place a level three event framework.

She said set up was well underway and that they were excited for the event to be able to proceed.

As part of the COVID-19 precautions patrons will be asked to sign in via QR code when entering the cup. They will also be asked to remain seated while consuming alcohol unless in a designated vertical drinking area.

Ms Waters said there will be some zoned areas where people won't be able to go, but there will still be lots of entertainment available.

"We have lots of entertainment, lots of food vans, lots of to see and do - still walkers, roving bands and of course the majestic horses. So everyone will be able to see the horse racers," she said.

She said there will also be increased security and signage at the venue to ensure people are social distancing.

Tasmania Police Inspector Ruth Orr said while the pandemic may have changed how people could enjoy the day, it hasn't changed how it will be policed.

She said police will undertake their usual patrols at the event, with the command bus on site for anyone needing assistance.

"We will still provide a high-visibility presence at the cup to make sure everyone can enjoy themselves safely, and consume alcohol responsibly," Inspector Orr said.

"If people need any assistance, the command bus will be there."

For those heading out or heading home once the big race is over, police are warning RBT sites will be operating.

"We would like to remind everyone not to drink, and drive," Inspector Orr said.
