Kings Punjab XI secured the 24-year-old for a whopping $1.4 million at the IPL's auction late on Thursday night, with Glenn Maxwell and Jhye Richardson (about $2.5 million each) the only Australians to be sold for more.
Meredith's Hurricanes teammates Ben McDermott and Matthew Wade both went unselected despite impressive performances in the BBL this season.
"It's pretty outrageous really - I wasn't really expecting too much to be honest going in," Meredith said.
"I was hopeful for a bid or two maybe but then it got a bit out of control.
"I probably only got a few hours sleep - I was on Facetime with my girlfriend at the time who couldn't believe what was happening.
"It was like it was fake to be honest, we were both pretty dumbfounded, it was a pretty long night."
