Training at the sports centre at Upper Burnie, the boys noticed the dogs, which they described as mid-size and muscly, because they thought they were fighting.

However, the situation became more serious when they heard a woman yell out for help. Harry said they heard the cry and ran over.

"By the time we got over there the dogs were gone," Harry said, but the woman was clearly distressed.

"There was a small puncture on the thigh and a bigger laceration on the thigh. I don't know how serious it was, but there was a lot of blood."

"For me, I was just thinking 'what do I have to do to help?'," Harry said.

Both boys have first aid experience through their involvement with the Burnie Surf Life Saving Club, which they put into action with the help of a bystander who provided a small first aid kit from his car.

"We just helped wrap her leg and keep the pressure on it until the ambulance arrived," Harry said.

Hunter said the dogs returned, but he and Harry were able to fend them off so they couldn't get close to the woman.

"She was petrified when the dogs came back ... and that's when the adrenaline kicked in for me," Hunter said. "She had the shakes for a while. We just tried to tell her to stay calm, and that we wouldn't let them get to her."

The boys wanted to acknowledge the others who helped out, including their coach, some teammates and the bystander who provided first aid supplies.

The woman has since reached out to the club to express her gratitude to everyone who helped her, calling them "champions".
