The City of Launceston Council has endorsed plans to push for a $208 million redevelopment of UTAS Stadium, including an indoor facility with three courts for sports such as basketball and netball.
With the facility's ability to become one court with a 5000-seat capacity, JackJumpers chief executive Simon Brookhouse said being able to use the centre would be a magnificent achievement.
"There's a long way to go ... but we're fully supporting of any enhancements to sporting facilities," he said.
"We've stated from day one that we're a team for Tasmania and to have another world-class facility to have to play in would be fantastic for us."
"It would hopefully give us an opportunity to play more games in the North than we'd be able to do at the Silverdome."
ELSEWHERE IN SPORT:
Both Basketball Tasmania and the Launceston Basketball Association have shown optimism for the facility and the possibility of more indoor courts mitigating shortages to an extent.
"It stems to all forms of the game, it gives us the ability to run clinics, preseason games, exhibition games for other basketball," Brookhouse said.
"Just to have a true world-class facility in Launceston gives the state a great opportunity to expand and grow the sport."
As well as a men's team, Brookhouse said it would be exciting to see a potential JackJumpers women's team suit-up in Launceston in the WNBL.
"There's interest from current WNBL teams in playing down here ... it's not too far off to consider a WNBL team in the national competition as well for the competition," he said.
The City of Launceston intends to request state and federal funding for the upgrades.
