The man nicknamed Skippy won the Bathurst 1000 in 1987 in a Holden VK Commodore SS with Peter Brock and Peter McLeod for the Holden Dealer Team after the Ford Sierras which finished first and second were later disqualified in what was a round of the short lived 1987 World Touring Car Championship.

His father, meanwhile, in his Holden Torana XU-1 and then a Holden Torana SLR5000 L34, took on, and succeeded against, the likes of Colin Bond, Alan Grice, Allan Moffat, John Harvey and Brock in the Australian Touring Car Championship in the 1970s. They were honoured at a ceremony at Symmons Plains on Saturday.

Parsons junior on Sunday admitted there were tears in his eyes when he found out he and his dad would be joining a select group at exactly the same time.

"It was a great honour and it is something that still hasn't sunk in as it is not something I ever really thought was possible for me,'' the 61-year-old said.

"As a person and as a competitor, I don't actually feel I am worthy and have really done enough in my career to justify this to be honest.

"Tasmania has had some great champions, so it really is a great honour to be part of that group."

Parsons also said it was an important moment for his 81-year-old father, who he said had been quite sick and hoping the honour might "give him a bit of a spring in his step".

"For a father and son to be the first inducted in the same year, that is obviously something that is really special and something that I will never forget,'' he said.

"Dad was just so happy as well and he was fighting back the tears and was just so emotional as well.

"It is something that feels like a dream."

Making it even more special for Parsons was the fact his induction happened at Symmons Plains, the place Parsons said it all started, instead of what is usually a more formal setting at the Tasmanian Motorsport Awards dinner, which have been cancelled in 2021 due to COVID-19 restrictions.

Before switching to four wheels, David Parsons won nine consecutive Tasmanian trails bike titles.

His touring car career saw him make 18 consecutive starts at Bathurst and compete in the Australian Touring Car/V8 Supercars championship 10 times between 1982 and 1999, racing for a number of teams during that time.

Graham Parsons finished with a number of top 10 finishes at circuits such as Sandown, Calder, and Winton as well as Symmons Plains.

The Parsons family is originally from South Spreyton with David now calling Wynyard home with Graham living at Somerset.

David and Graham were inducted with former Formula Vee champion Michelle Fish, of Hobart, who died in January.

The Tasmanian Motorsport Hall of Fame was established in 1989.
