Upper House MP Tammy Franks will bring a bill to parliament to impose a ban ahead of the 2021 hunting season scheduled to begin in March.

"Why we continue to perpetuate yet another so-called sport based on the suffering of animals is beyond me," she said.

"Duck hunting is a relic of our past, and frankly it should stay there."

Duck hunting is already banned in Western Australia, NSW and Queensland, although in NSW landowners can sustainably manage native game birds on agricultural land.

The RSPCA said almost three-quarters of South Australians would like to see hunting stopped, according to a survey conducted last year.

It said seven out of 10 people also indicated they would avoid areas where shooters were present.

"The government's decision to allow this outdated, cruel activity flies in the face of survey findings and public opinion on duck-hunting and nature tourism," the RSPCA said.

This year's hunting season will run from March 20 to June 27.

Some restrictions apply, including a four-duck daily bag limit.
