A $2 million project to build specialist disability accommodation is gaining traction in Launceston and hopes to address the deficiency in investment in the region for purpose-built housing.

Multicap Tasmania and TasBuild, who are funding the development, have joined forces to get the development off the ground for people living with a physical disability.

Two houses will be built in Dowling Street, Launceston and are promising to provide tailor made facilities for people who require purpose built housing under the National Disability Insurance Scheme.

They will be able to accommodate eight people, with each home featuring four bedrooms, a kitchen and bathrooms to maintain or further the future residents independence.

Multicap Tasmania chief executive officer Nigel Hill said it would benefit residents and could provide accommodation as well.

"We think this is a really good outcome to our residents in Launceston who will be moving into it [the homes], but also provides new opportunities for others in Launceston who are seeking that sort of accommodation as well," he said.

"Having built one new property in Launceston in 2017, the opportunity provided by TasBuild to develop these new properties in Dowling Street will bring a high level of supported accommodation to people requiring that in Launceston."

The two homes are expected to be built by late April and MT, who will manage the properties for at least 20 years, is working to finalise the residents who will move in.

TasBuild chief executive officer Michael Irwin said the project was a great outcome for everyone.

Mr Irwin said a major TasBuild objective was to facilitate construction activity in the building industry especially in the COVID-19 environment.

"We are delighted to help facilitate the construction, knowing this will not only benefit the construction industry but will have flow on effects for the broader Launceston community," he said.

"The stock of purpose-built housing for the disability sector is sadly deficient and our involvement in this project will hopefully result in setting a benchmark for disability housing and provide a long-term community benefit.

"This project is being assessed to determine whether the model works and can be replicated in other regions in need of purpose-built disability housing."

The homes will be built to meet the Fully Accessible housing standard of the NDIS.

The funds from TasBuild will be repaid after it is built and has settled into the investment phase.
