Hailing from Wyena, Alex Lack watched the nearby Blue Derby network grow as his own mountain bike credentials accumulated.

Having become familiar with their many delights, he conquered the entire network in one ride.

"It was a last minute decision to do it," he said. "I planned a bit of a route to get every trail in without doubling up much which is not easy and then just headed out and did it."

Lack posted details on the Strava app which revealed he totalled 163km and climbed for 4393m over 10 hours and 40 minutes.

"It did not feel that long. I estimated it would take about nine hours so it was longer than I thought but it was pretty fun.

"I kind of just did the big loops first and worked my way through it. The good thing about Derby is that you can do one loop of maybe an hour and a half and go back to the car for some food then go back out again and slowly get through every trail."

Lack's route took in all the black diamond runs and included a few close encounters with resident wildlife.

"I did the trail out to Branxholm, then rode to the top of Atlas, one side of the hill doing Trouty and Krushkas, then all the middle stuff and finished on loops like Return to Sender and Kings Wall. Three times up Snig Track was pretty solid.

"There were a few sections on Detonate and Shearpin that you don't really want to be doing on an XC bike so I walked a few bits but I did most of it. I took it pretty cruisy down the really gnarly stuff.

"I ran over a couple of snakes and dodged another."

The 23-year-old former Launceston College and UTas student, who now lives in Launceston and works at Cycle2 bike shop, went to mountain bike world championships in Andorra, Cairns and Switzerland as a junior and under-23 and has since ridden in the National Road Series.

Lack is contemplating upcoming national mountain bike championships on home soil at Maydena and it is no surprise that he is keen to focus on marathon-distance racing and is a major advocate for the Blue Derby network.

"They are probably the best trails in the world.

"We are pretty lucky to have trails at this level within an hour or so of Launnie.

"It's been a bit funny this year with not many events on so I'm not sure what I'll do. I'll probably just keep doing things like this for fun."
