The Launceston leg of the inaugural motorsport extravaganza wrapped up on Tuesday with near-capacity crowds enjoying three days of action at Symmons Plains.

Event co-organiser Barry Rogers was decisive about his plans to bring the event back in 2022.

"It wasn't a one-off, that wasn't our intention ever," he said.

"Our intention is for this to happen year on year and I'd like to think that in 20 years' time we'll look back at this inaugural one and say there it was, it started in 2021 and in 2041 we're still doing it."

The event looked on shaky ground in the lead-up to Christmas as several mainland states battled spikes in coronavirus cases.

Rogers said the support of Motorsport Tasmania and the state government had been imperative to the event going ahead.

"I think it's the first time ever that four national categories have come to Tasmania on the one weekend so it was really pleasing to see that," he said.

"There were some really exciting races, we couldn't have asked for any more [spectators] than what turned out because that's all that could come."

Australian Racing Group chief executive Matt Braid believes this year's event has laid a foundation for what can grow to become a showpiece on the state's sporting calendar.

"Tasmania's motorsport fans - there's plenty of them and they're very passionate," he said.

"We have the Supercars round here but we think there's scope to have more than that and today's event is something a bit different.

"This year is about making this all it can be - we think we're delivering on that - and we'd love to carry it forward in the future and make it an iconic event not only for Tasmanian sport, but nationally so that everyone goes 'I want to go to Race Tasmania in January'."

Braid said Race Tasmania could be in line for a similar date next year should it return again in 2022.

"Certainly Australia Day or around Australia Day - it's an iconic date and therefore it could lend itself to making the event even more iconic," he said.

Race Tasmania will continue at Baskerville Raceway in Hobart from January 29 to 31.
