It was an emotional affair at Avoca as residents of the Northern Midlands were honoured for their contribution to the community.

Citizen of the year David Gatenby said he was humbled to be rewarded for his service.

He said he was just one of several volunteers that contribute daily to community life throughout the municipality.

Mr Gatenby's family travelled from across Australia to be with him to celebrate the special day.

Catherine Connell's work in organising a bushfire relief appeal earned her the West Tamar Citizen of the Year award.

She was congratulated at a service at Riverside, along with a range of other local community achievers.
