Trainer Angela Brakey revealed the gelding's unusual preparation after he won the $50,000 Summer Cup as a 150-1 despised outsider.

In the first eight days of January, White Hawk raced three times, for a second in the Longford Cup, ninth in the Devonport Cup and eighth in the Brighton Cup.

But that's not all. Two days after the last of those runs, Brakey galloped him again.

"I decided he's a horse that I just have to gallop a lot so I just changed his work a bit and it's paying off," the trainer said.

"I also do a lot of trotting with him and he seems to like that - it makes him a lot sharper on the track.

"He'd probably walk another 50 to 100km a day in his yard so he's plenty fit enough."

With his supreme fitness and racing on a track playing to on-pace runners, White Hawk was able to lead all-the-way in Sunday's traditional Hobart Cup lead-up race.

"Stan (Tsaikos) rode him exactly as I asked," Brakey said.

"He'd been going back in his races and getting boxed in so I was rapt to see him go to the front."

The former Sheffield trainer now based at Longford also finished sixth in the Summer Cup with White Hawk's half-brother White Cliffs who battled on well after a tough run.

She looks to have two worthy Hobart Cup runners, given that both horses will be better placed in a handicap than at weight-for-age.

However with so many good horses finishing out of the placings in the Summer Cup, the form will present a poser for punters - as it always does when a rank outsider wins a leader-dominated race.

Leading Victorian trainer Mick Price could have runners in both the Tasmanian Derby and Hobart Cup.

Price has reportedly earmarked the three-year-old classic for Alloway and Bury Road, with Craig Newitt and Michael Walker the probable riders.

Alloway was a close second over 2000m at Flemington 10 days ago and Bury Road is a last-start maiden winner over 2000m at Benalla.

Price won the Derby in 2009 with the filly Betwixt ridden by Linda Meech.

The trainer may also tackle the Hobart Cup with staying mare Miss Damita, winner of the $50,000 Woodford Cup at Warrnambool last month and a placegetter at Sandown and Moonee Valley.

Tasmanian-owned Double You Tee is also a likely Hobart Cup runner for last year's Launceston Cup-winning trainer Patrick Payne.

Double You Tee ran yet another city placing when a close second to Mosh Music over 2400m at Sandown on Saturday.
