Launceston is among 12 cities bidding to host matches but upgrades, including increasing the UTAS Stadium capacity to 21,200, are expected to cost $60 million.
Following November's pledge of $250,000 from the Liberal state government to begin the process, Senator Don Farrell, the Shadow Minister for Sport, threw his party's support behind the push.
Joining Tasmanian Senator Helen Polley, he visited proposed training bases at Churchill Park, Birch Avenue and the NTCA Ground as well as UTAS Stadium which has been confirmed as the venue for any matches in the state.

"I was blown away by UTAS," said Senator Farrell, whose cousin Nick Holland played at the ground for Hawthorn. "It's a magnificent stadium and the pitch was amazing.
"I'll certainly be recommending to my colleagues that we will make a contribution towards this."
Asked if we was visiting other potential host cities, Senator Farrell said: "This is the first one I've come to so I'm making Northern Tasmania a priority."
During their time in Launceston, the senators met with Northern Tasmania Junior Soccer Association representatives at Churchill Park and Football Tasmania president Bob Gordon.
Gordon said the imminent construction of two more pitches confirmed Churchill Park's status as "probably the best facility in the state for community sport".
NTJSA president Ben Radbone said getting to see World Cup matches would be a huge motivator for girls to play soccer while two 15-year-olds from North Launceston Eagles demonstrated the passion underlying the city's bid.
"It would be an inspiration to all girls in this area if games were played here," said Kathleen Fuller.
Grace Radbone added: "It would encourage girls to get involved in the sport. I think when people do think of the sport they think it's more male dominated but there are a lot of females playing and for me there's a lot of enjoyment in it.
"I did not have a lot of fun playing other sports but this has become a massive passion of mine."
