Primary Industries Minister Guy Barnett launched the transport pilot at cherry orchard Cherries Tasmania on Monday.

The pilot collaborates between the government and Fruit Growers Tasmania and will offer free travel for seasonal workers to Tasmania's fruit orchards.

It will offer transport services six days per week to participating businesses using a bus and coach-based transport services. The pilot expects to transport up to 250 workers per day.

Huon Valley will test the pilot, before its rolled out across the rest of Tasmanian fruit growing areas, such as the North and North-West.

Fruit Growers Tasmania chief executive Peter Cornish said it was a complex project that had taken a while to get off the ground.

"There are people out there, who don't have access to reliable transport, there's a whole cohort of people who we want to have the opportunity to get out here and work on our farms," he said.

Details on how the pilot will work, from what locations and to which orchards were still being ironed out, he said.

"There are a lot of unknowns, it's complex, but that doesn't mean that we don't get out there and have a go," he said.

Transport to Tasmania's farms is often cited as a significant barrier for some locals to take seasonal work. The government and Fruit Growers Tasmania hope this pilot will alleviate that barrier. It has prompted other producers, such as large-scale berry producer Costa, to implement its bus transport service for its pickers.

Mr Cornish said it had been "a challenging year" for fruit growers for labour, but these initiatives would help set the sector up for the future.

This year, there's been double the amount of Tasmanians who have signed up for picking jobs, up from 3000 last year.

Cherries Tasmania's Nick Hansen said labour was not a new problem to face farmers, but this pilot would help set it up for the future.

He said it could be in place for 10 or 15 years and support the sector.

"Labour has always been an issue, this is not a new issue," he said.

"But transport is one of the final pieces of a complex puzzle."

Mr Hansen often said it wasn't just access to a vehicle that was the problem, but the cost of travel made it prohibitive.

He said he knew of many people out there who wanted to work on farms but chose not to because of the transport availability and cost.

Mr Barnett said the government was working hand-in-hand with the industry to provide Tasmanians with seasonal work incentives.
