Asked whether he was passionate about having Tasmanian players on his list, the 57-year-old former NBA player described the need for home-state representation as "important".
"I think we have to look very strongly at any Tasmanian player that's come out of there," he said.
"We have to look very strongly at developing Tasmanian players that want to stay there or go to college and come back to us.
"I think it's important that we have that connection, when you're creating a bloodline and a culture, you need to have those people there that feel like they're at home and want to love and play in that state."

Already eyeing off players from leagues around the globe, Roth is preparing to sit down with chief executive Simon Brookhouse and wade his way through the "really good' free agent class when he starts his role on March 1.
"I've had numerous calls this morning from NBA people, from college basketball coaches, from scouts in the NBA, European coaches all wanting to help and I already have a list of players from all different people that are available," he said on Thursday.
"We are going to have a big net and we are going to go through that process and there are some very good players.
"My goal is hopefully we can find three or four foundational players right off the bat that can hopefully be in Hobart for five, six, seven, eight years and build the core with those guys."
