Devonport Cup organisers are gearing up for a big day despite early delays putting planning roughly two months behind usual timelines.

With capacity limits now set and COVID restrictions in place, Devonport Racing Club chairperson Barry Milton said it's full steam ahead for Wednesday.

"It's scaled down in some aspects, but at least we're here," Mr Milton said.

"It's coming together now."

He said even as close at two weeks ago some details were being confirmed.

"It took a lot of effort from Tasracing and the Devonport Racing Club to get it pulled together so late," Mr Milton said.

He said the organisers have made every effort to comply with COVID restrictions, and that COVID marshalls will be at the event.

With marquees being built around him, he said that the Spreyton course was in good shape.

"It looks the same, there'll just be less people and fewer marquees," Mr Milton said.

"There's one marquee that's 30 metres long and 10 metres deep just to fit 150 people.

"Now that's a big marquee."

Coronavirus restrictions mean capacity is about 50 per cent as compared with previous years, sitting at 2500 people.

However, Mr Milton said ticket sales were healthy.

"We've got just under 200 tickets still available online, that's it," he said.

"It's always a good party and a nice day to dress up.

"Now we're just hoping for good weather."

With social distancing requirements, the marquees have reduced numbers, but one of the biggest changes is the introduction of zoning across the venue.

Guests will be allocated to a single zone and must stay in that area for the entirety of the event. There are four marquee zones and one public zone, each with toilets.

"We used to use this zoning in the good old days when people could get a bit rowdy at the races," Mr Milton said.

"It makes tracing easier in case of an infection and keeps people from mingling.

"We want to run a very safe event."

Another roll-on effect of the zoning is that marquee guests will be unable to enter the fashions on the field competition, reducing competitors down to patrons in the public zone.

Mr Milton was asked if he was disappointed he could not compete, but he was accepting of the restrictions.

"I don't think they have my age bracket as a category anyway," he said.

Buses will be running to the venue from the Devonport CBD from 11am.

It will be available at the end of the event as well.

Patrons are encouraged by Mr Milton to "slip, slop, slap," prepare for any weather, and to bring a fold-up chair as vertical drinking is unavailable.

"We've got a big field, and we're confident everything will run smoothly," he said.

"It's just a good day to get dressed up and enjoy the company of those around you."

Tickets are required for entry to the Devonport Cup and patrons will be allocated wristbands identifying their zone.

Gates open from 10am at Devonport Racing Club, Spreyton.
