A development application for the Da Da Art Gallery, which was designed to display local, Aboriginal and private art collections, was approved by the City of Launceston council in 2019. The six story building was set to house a café, makers studio, bar and restaurant with construction expected to begin this year.
An application to alter the approved plans was advertised on December 19. The new plans would see the size of the art gallery reduced and office space added in un-utilised art spaces.
IN OTHER NEWS:
"The art gallery space is intended to be provided on part of Level 1, 2 & 6, open office space on Levels 4 & 5 with Level 6 a combination of art gallery, restaurant and bar," the new plans read.
"It is anticipated the art gallery, restaurant and bar will create 8 full-time equivalent jobs. The operating hours of the Gasholder building are 7am to 11pm, Monday to Sunday."
The new plans also involve a massive remodelling of the building's exterior with developers doing away with visually dominant features in a bid to highlight the heritage values of the site.
"The size and bulk of the building has been refined to minimise the visual dominance and highlight the industrial heritage of the Gasholder," the development application reads.
"The entrance foyer of the proposed Gasholder building with display some interpretive historical information of the Gasholder and its operation to supply gas that lit the streets and homes of Launceston."
The development application for a multi-story carpark adjacent to the proposed building was knocked back in January last year despite councillors wanting to approve them.
Revised plans for the carpark were eventually approved in March after an agreement was reached between the developer and the Heritage Council.
Plans for the gasworks site are out for community consultation until January 11.
