The theft of about 176 sleepers from an unused rail corridor in the North-East has caused an estimated $10,000 worth of damage.
The track is in a rail corridor which Dorset Council hopes to use to build a bike trail between Lilydale and Scottsdale.
Proponents of a heritage rail line from Launceston to Lilydale had hoped the track would remain in tact despite plans for a bike trail.

North-East Residents and Farmers chairman Stuart Bryce said this in the second time sleepers had been stolen from the track in the last 12 months.
He said this time about 176 wooden sleepers were stolen.
"In lifting and removing the rail they have bent the track. So that will have to be reshaped and put back," Mr Bryce said.
Mr Bryce said an expert had estimated it would cost about $10,000 to repair the damage.
Dorset Mayor Greg Howard was not aware of the incident when contacted for comment.
