The body recently made a submission to the government as part of a draft wild deer management plan for Tasmania.

It said deer farm releases or escapes had been a source of new deer populations.

The council said there needed to be enforceable regulations to limit the risk of deer escapes from farms and strong penalties for negligent releases.

The Invasive Species Council want the government to establish a multi-agency taskforce to manage feral deer, led by Biosecurity Tasmania.

It has proposed the taskforce be advised by Game Services Tasmania and a body of ecologists, conservationists, farmers and recreational hunters.

The council said a zoning map which indicated populations that needed to be eradicated should be developed.

It said eradication of deer from the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area needed to be a priority and a substantial containment zona around the TWWHA should be established.

Tasmanian Deer Advisory Committee chairman Andrew Winwood said the committee supported the removal of deer from world heritage areas and other sensitive areas around the state.

He said it would support the establishment of deer management zones.

"The TDAC have for some time been advocating for the removal of satellite reer herds, but this will only be achieved by committed management," Mr Winwood said.

"These satellite herds are predominantly on private land and, therefore, any plan that does not include the landholder's permission for removal will be a waste of time and effort."

He said management needed to confine deer to their current geographical range and protect agricultural, environmental and cultural values.
