Now in its 112th year, money raised goes to support four Northern charities - City Mission, The Salvation Army, The Benevolent Society and St Vincent de Paul.
Donations have flowed into the appeal - from children donating their pocket money, to businesses raising funds through events and local sporting groups pitching in.
IN OTHER NEWS:
A recent donation of more than $42,000 from local financial planning business TG Financial has bolstered the support The Examiner will be able to provide to the four charities.
Owner Tony Gray said the donation came through client dividends.
"Through investments that we've used for some client portfolios," Mr Gray said.
"We had the opportunity to be able to buy them at a discount to their asset banking and collect a nice income yield for clients, and because the underlying managers that put together those portfolios donate their services, instead the two Future Generation companies make a donation each year to charity."
With client permission, Tony and his staff identified charities to support - this year choosing the Empty Stocking Appeal.
"This year, we decided to support the appeal because of the four underlying charities, because we thought they were four good charities and we know the money will be well spent, we and our clients know that is needed," Mr Gray said.
"It was a fairly simple decision because this was going to be for broad community benefit."
