While the staunch bowling of Launceston's James Faulkner (2-22) and Riley Meredith (2-29) stopped the Sydney Sixers in their tracks, South African batsmen Colin Ingram (55) and Tim David (58 off 33 balls) had things handled on the other end.

The Canes would beat the Sixers by 16 runs.

David, who was the player of the match, joined the Hurricanes after playing T20 with the Singaporean national team.

"Griff [Canes coach Adam Griffith] rang me some time during lockdown and they had an opportunity for me to come and play and I was really excited by it," he said.

"It's great to be here."

Weeks prior to starting with the boys in purple, David was able to wet his beak in Tassie T20 through a stint with premier league side the Greater Northern Raiders.

As a middle-order batsman, David said he was confident in his ability to capitalise on ground made by Ingram earlier on in the innings.

"It's just a chance to take a few opportunities to learn and it takes a few chances to get it right, and it doesn't go right every time," he said.

"I was fortunate it came off tonight but there's going to be plenty of times where it's a miss.

"We're lucky that we've got a class batting order, with our international players and local ones as well.

"It's a great opportunity out in the middle, it's a great batting wicket particularly in white-ball cricket."

He said his time with Singapore and the Raiders really helped him fine-tune and improve his batting prowess.

"I got some momentum coming through and felt confident about how I was hitting the ball and batting so it's been great transferring across," David said.

"I'm really pleased that there's been stuff I've been able to work on and improve, hopefully I'm not finished improving.

"There's lots of stuff I can keep getting better at and hopefully there's opportunities to perform and the Hurricane wins keep coming."
