After Gee Gee Fiorente took out Friday evening's Golden Mile at Spreyton, the wait could be finally coming to an end.
The five-year-old gelding ($4.20) claimed the $30,000 lead-up race over defending Devonport Cup winner Newhart ($2.35fav), wearing him down in the home straight to win by a neck, with the John Blacker-trained Zatacla ($5) in third.
The youngest member of the Wells team, Trent Wells, said Gee Gee Fiorente was a far superior horse to the one that ran in the 2020 Devonport Cup, where he finished fifth, which was followed by unplaced attempts at the Hobart and Launceston Cups.
"We would love to win a Devonport Cup again, and because it's been so long since our last win its the only race I really want to win.
"He might just be the horse to do it.
"Dad (Leon) started aiming at the race since last year - we toughened him up with all those cup runs last season which he probably wasn't ready for.
"Randy (Tan, jockey) rode him a treat today and he settled really well, which was something he didn't do last Devonport Cup, he over-raced really bad, and he should get in well with the weights."
Friday's result makes it four wins in a row for Gee Gee Fiorente, which stretches back to July.
While the final decision will be up to Leon, who looks after the horse the majority of the time at Brighton, Trent said the Sheffield Cup on December 20 looks an unlikely option heading into the Devonport Cup on January 6.
"It looks like he pulled up pretty well from this race and being such a grinder, I would hate to dour him out any more by running in the Sheffield Cup but we'll leave that decision up to dad," he said.
"He's gone a month between runs before with just a trial to sharpen him up."
In other races on the card, it was a triumphant return to Tasmania for jockey Anthony Darmanin after riding the first four favourites to wins.
He started with Sharma Rama before guiding Readily Rewarded, Easy Road and California Honey home.
