The allegation was identified through the National Redress Scheme.
A state government spokesperson said the allegation had been referred to Tasmania Police.
"Principles of natural justice and other legal considerations demand that further comment is not made whilst the investigation is underway," they said.
"It is important to note that being stood down is not an indication of wrongdoing.
"The presumption of innocence until proven guilty must be upheld."
The government last month announced it would hold a commission of inquiry to investigate the responses of state government agencies to historical allegations of child sexual abuse.
This was announced after considerable pressure resulting from allegations a former Launceston General Hospital nurse, James Geoffrey Griffin, assaulted children and young people over his career.
An Ashley Youth Detention Centre worker was also stood down from work last month when a historic rape allegation from the mid-1990s was exposed.
