The traffic signal upgrade project - part of a plan to get Launceston "smart city ready" - involves replacing old signal boxes, installing a network of CCTV for live traffic monitoring during peak times and improved telecommunication infrastructure.
So far, 51 new controllers, 36 standalone solar-powered Bluetooth receivers for traffic monitoring, 18 Bluetooth receivers built into traffic signals and 18 CCTV cameras have been installed, along with eight kilometres of communications cabling.

The cameras feed live footage to the Department of State Growth's Traffic Management Centre.
Works started in January and should be finalised this month, according to a departmental spokesperson.
"This upgrade gets Launceston's traffic infrastructure smart city ready with capability to optimise traffic flow and manage congestion across the city," the spokesperson said.
"The $3.5 million signals upgrade is part of the broader smart cities project under the Launceston City Deal."
The smart cities and suburbs program is a $10.3 million partnership between the Australian and Tasmanian governments and the City of Launceston.
