Mr Roberts is a member of the Wynyard Aero Club and club president David McCarthy said the engine of the Jabiru SP6 cut out over the Nut.

After taking off from the airport at Wynyard about 8.30am, Owen Roberts had to avoid cattle to find a safe place to land on a beef property at Stanley.

Mr Roberts bought the SP6 from the estate of Brian Raven, the founder of the Wynyard Aero Club and celebrated airman, who died in February.

Tasmania Police initially said the incident was a crash, but Mr McCarthy said it was a "forced landing".

"There is a distinct difference," Mr McCarthy said, adding that Mr Roberts had maintained control of the plane and performed a textbook emergency landing.

Mr McCarthy said Mr Roberts was an experienced airman who negotiated the loss of engine power exactly as he would have been trained.

"In the event of a failure like that, you're trying to put it down safely and walk away, which is exactly what Owen has done."

Mr McCarthy said the main damage to the plane was a collapsed nose wheel, and that the propeller and the cowling received some minor damage.

He said that it was a nerve wracking morning attempting to find out who was involved in the incident and how serious it was.

Tasmania Police Acting Inspector Stewart Williams said Mr Roberts had suffered some possible back injuries.

"The pilot managed to get himself out of the aircraft, at that point he called emergency services," Acting Inspector Williams said.

Tasmania Police, firefighters and paramedics responded.

"The pilot was examined and found to have some superficial minor injuries, he was then transported through to North West Regional Hospital for further assessment."

Acting Inspector Williams said police contacted the Air Transport Safety Bureau and Recreational Aviation Australia and an investigation will be undertaken.

He said the plane appeared to be in a good mechanical condition, and the exact cause of the loss of power was under investigation.

He said Mr Roberts was lucky to have walked away from what could have been a tragic accident.
