You're dreamin' on electric cars
KEEP on dreaming about electric cars, Brian Wightman (The Sunday Examiner, November 22). Don't let facts shatter them. Here are just a few.

Their price would be a lot higher without heavy subsidisation and not paying for road upkeep (as in fuel tax); their market penetration is negligible (0.5 per cent in the US); most owners own fossil fuel cars in addition; carbon emissions in their manufacture often exceed those saved during their lifetime use; more than 95 per cent of the electricity they use is produced by fossil fuels; the International Energy Agency estimates the cost to reduce a tonne of carbon emissions by them is $750 whereas by improvements in power stations just $6.
Notwithstanding the above these cars may have to be used for lowering air pollution in many city's CBDs.

Not-so-valued cricket member
SO much for being a valued ACF (Australian Cricket Family) member.
ACF's pre-sale for the Indian ODI series opened 9 am on November 19 (one day before general sales). I set up my aging computer in readiness to book a ticket. The time came, but I couldn't get to the "buy now" webpage. Then a dreaded error message was displayed, and that was the best I could get. Ticketek's phone number would not put me through to an operator.
I travelled to my local Ticketek agency, but the staff member didn't know anything about ACF pre-sales. I got access to a more modern computer (about an hour after sales started), but Ticketek wouldn't accept my previous password (ACF number).
An email check found a code sent out at 8:44 am (when I had been setting up for buying). I selected a seat type, but the only ticket option was a mobile ticket (requiring a smartphone). I am a senior, and like most others do not have a smartphone.
Wasn't that the same problem they had with the COVIDSafe app?
Too many people without Smartphones.
Why have Cricket Australia failed to publicise that access to International matches this year is limited to smartphone users. Is it that they don't want seniors attending these matches? Isn't that some kind of age discrimination?
Why do many groups assume that only smartphone users go to any type of event?
Looks like I will have to find a sports bar - because ODIs are no longer free to air.
At least I'll have a seat there (thanks to no vertical drinking). I notice that MCG and SACA members have to go into a ballot to get one seat for one of the first four days.
Will they require a smartphone as well?

Evandale puts on fantastic show
I ATTENDED the festival on Saturday and it really was fantastic. Low key, relaxed community atmosphere and the street settings were charming.
Lots of different music genres under 10 different verandahs and all within easy walking distance. I think the organisers did an amazing job - especially for the first year and with all the Covid restrictions as well.
What an achievement. Next year they plan to close the main street. Many of us are already looking forward to the 2021 event.
