Former player Jade Selby said he'd been compiling stats and lists of players since the team's inception for a few years.

"I updated the history of the club back in 2011 so I was able to break those stats down," he said.

"It wasn't done in a minute, it took me a while but I was able to breakdown decade-by-decade for players so we had nominees and a select group players from each decade from the '60s onwards.

"Helping to pick teams that [I] thought represented that decade the best ... it was great and to be able to get pictures of players too."

Launceston is the second oldest cricket club in Tasmania, joining the NTCA in 1886.

"It's a very historic club and quite a successful over its history with a lot of good contributors, so to be able to award those guys I think is pretty important," Selby said.

"We're going to announce teams for the first part, but from the 1950s we're going to present to the groups.

"There's a few descendants from the '50s team that'll be there and '60s onwards we'll have players. I spoke to the son of a former player who's 96, he's made our '40s and '50s teams but obviously he can't attend."

Selby said while there will be a few no-brainers named to teams, some former players were pleasantly surprised by their inductions.

"There's a couple that weren't going to make the function who had to be whispered in the ear: 'maybe it's a good idea that you turn up'," he said.

"You don't have to be a brain surgeon to know that David Boon will make a few decade teams, he's our greatest player ever."
