Prime Minister Scott Morrison confirmed recently that international students would not be among those who would receive flights into Australia.

He said all available space would be made available for repatriation flights, to bring stranded Australians home from international locations.

University of Tasmania deputy vice-chancellor (international) Rob Wilson said UTAS continued to support its international student cohort to study remotely.

"International students are still applying to study with us at similar levels to previous years," he said.

"While travel restrictions remain, we look forward to supporting these new students to study online."

Mr Wilson said UTAS experienced about 700 fewer applications from international students this year compared to 2019.

The current international student cohort is sitting at 8400.

"Since the outset of the COVID-19 pandemic, the university has planned and prepared for a range of scenarios, including that travel restrictions and uncertainty around the return of international students would continue well into 2021 and beyond," he said.

"However, our strategy - prior to, during, and after COVID-19 - has been to focus on growing domestic student numbers as we create a distinctively Tasmanian offering. We are the university of and for Tasmania."

Mr Wilson said UTAS had seen a 24 per cent increase in domestic enrolment in 2020 driven by their core degrees and the courses developed to support Tasmanians through COVID-19.

"Applications from Tasmanian Year 12 school leavers for 2021 are also up compared to this time last year by 36 percent in the North, 38 percent in the North-West and 35 percent in the South," he said.

"This growth in domestic students, coupled with our ability to support large numbers of our international students to continue their studies online, has us well positioned to help our students continue their education in what continues to be a challenging time for our community."

UTAS has mapped a timeline for students to return to campus, with plans to have all students back for Semester 1, 2021.
